Shifting from Renaissance to Revival

Re-naissance or rebirth – A new beginning, breaking away from the past – This has always been celebrated in art and innovation. Breaking away has always been seen as a moment of freedom and celebration. All this is based on the fact that the past has been oppressive of innovation, expression and progress.

But rarely do we celebrate moving back in time. To a time where minimalism and brutalism didn’t exist. To a time what some in the west call Baroque. This was a time where design, shape, colour was celebrated. But in the name of progress and modernism, we moved to dainty, sharp, and a slow death in beige.

So, as a contrast to re-naissance (re-birth), it is time we also incorporated some revival of classic, timeless, and soulful design (and yes, this implies that minimalism is soul-less). At The Festive Store, we incorporate this very spirit and that has us working hard to bring back some forgotten pieces of jewellery and jewellery making traditions. Take our signature ‘Bugadi’ for example, made in Jadau style. There was a point in time when these pieces of jewelry, worn on top of the ear cuff was all the rage and their designs were innovative to say the least. And until recently, they have been but a forgotten piece of our design heritage.

It is time that we re-visit such signature pieces and designs that speak so loudly about where our design roots come from. To a time when colour, shape and design not only signified style, but also art, history, spirituality and self-expression. If you are among the few who romanticize this idea and want to bring back history, then the surest way to do that is to wear it like a badge.

It is not the responsibility of influencers and celebrities to bring about a revival. It is up to you and me. Just like how hanging up a piece by Ravi Varma piece completely changes the vibe, imagine being able to walk out of the painting and into reality. You can be the one that walks out of the frame. Inspire, or get inspired, you decide.
